Large antique French Empire portico clock in gilt and patinated bronze with mercurial gilt bronze dial with enamel painted roman numerals and Breguet blue steel hands.

This gorgeous clock would date to first half of the 19th century and is an impressively large size. The column supports have exquisitely molded ornamentation and borders and is supported by ornately cast ancient Roman style feet.

Original throughout and in excellent working order this is an 8 day clock with two train movement and has a silvered bell chime for the second movement that strikes and counts the hours. You can choose not to wind the second train and just have the clock keep time by winding the first train only, if you like it quite.

Swedish Gustavian painted pine long case clock with German 8 day movement. Provenance dating back to 1791 , the hand painted dial with the name of the original owner. Original carved pine case with Gustavian fluted etching to door and circular raised motif to base.

A later mechanism with twin weights and chain driven, so no need to wind up, just pull the chain down ...and it is very good working order.

Description

French  rococo heavy gilded bronze clock adorned with cherubs and in the most beautiful condition. A glazed watch glass covers the painted enamel face with roman numerals and steel hands.

 

In excellent working order and with original silk suspension the two train movement with silver bell strike.

A watch glass covers the real of the clock  mechanism. The back plate of the workings is signed "Gresson A Paris"

The mercurial gilded ( using lots of real gold on ..) bronze chased case is in excellent condition. The quality of the gilding is extremely high and of course the gilding is very thick , without wear. Beautifully chisseled details with highly burnished sections to emphasise the quality of the gilding.

 

The clock weighs around 9 kg which is quite heavy and may be due to the dense gilding as well as the bronze case.

Movement has been replaced by a late 19th century 8 day works, but this does not detract from such a wonderful clock. Most early movements were only 24 hour duration. This only needs winding once a week.

The Waterbury Clock Company, one of many 19th century Connecticut-based clock firms, began as a subsidiary of Benedict & Burnham, a brass manufacturing company, in 1857. Benedict & Burnham had no background in clock making, but it saw clocks as a means to use its brass. Over the years, Waterbury would become a leading manufacturer of clocks—by the time it closed its doors in 1944, it had made some of the most memorable American antique wall clocks and mantel clocks, as well as highly regarded clock movements and watches.

This unusual clock cabinet is veneered in rare Brazillian rosewood, also known as Jacaranda.

Mechanism in good original condition, complete with key , pendulum and two cast iron weights.
