This chair is likely a 20th century bespoke made chair of a very heavy dense timber like honduras or cuban mahogany. The joints are superbly made with precision and are all pegged in the traditional french manner of the period 18th and early 19th century. Beautifully carved Empire leaf and wreath designs to top of chair back and seat rail. Fluted pillaster column back ending in sabre rear legs and tapering front legs terminating in lions paw feet. This chair is very solid and heavy and probably made to exactly match an original from 1805 by the Master Ebeniste George Jacob and will suit modern dining with a large wide seat upholstered with springs for extra comfort. A couple of rattan seats have been supported/ replaced by timber seat infills. This style of cushion is very easy for recovering in your favourite material and makes the sitting very comfortable for those long epic dinners. The carved fruitwood frames are all in very good sturdy original condition without loosness and have a waxed patina. More images available.

The well shaped and carved solid walnut frame with acanthus scrolls and barley twist carving and with original baroque tapestry woolwork seat and back. The generous sized seat has recently been restored under the fabric whilst retaining the original hand knotted woolwork upholstery. A few minor wear marks to the middle of the wool seat fabric, see last image, but nicely conserved to the sub upholstery in order to retain the original look and material. .
The frame is in original condition, nice and firm and retains its gorgeous burnished waxed patina.

Utilising the finest figurative Australian timbers Goldman produced furniture of the highest quality. These armchairs are made of fiddleback blackwood and came from his South Yarra built factory in 1928. The ususual upward curved backs, the elegant scroll armrests and turned column supports to stepped tapering legs have all the hallmark of the quality of Harry Goldman. Each chair is meticulously crafted in solid blackwood and bears the brass plaque under the seat rail of Goldman Melbourne. The Goldman factory in Melbourne produced superb quality furniture exclusively in Australian timbers. His fine quality furniture achieved gold medal status in overseas exhibitions. From his Melbourne workshops He made special customised furniture for the reknowned architect Walter Burley Griffin for Cafe Australia and others exporting quality Australian made furniture to the British Empire. Made from solid cherrywood, these rare chairs have original patina surface and have recently been upholstered in the traditional manner of the period. The ususual curved backs or lyre shape with carved knot back splat. Raised on elegant cherrywood cabriole legs to fron and sabre rear legs. The back legs and back rests strengthened in the original design with cherrywood cross grained inserts. Quite likely made by famous Biedermeier period company of the Danhauser factory in early 19th century Vienna. Similar examples exist in the MAK and the Hofmoebel Sammlung, a treasure trove of original Biedermeier antique furniture in Vienna, Austria. Nice and sturdy but of elegant design and in museum quality condition.

The elegant Empire gondola backs inspired by French examples and designed by noted Viennese designer Josef Danhauser 1805-1845. Solid walnut construction with shaped backs that scroll very elegantly and have a book matched walnut veneered top rail and back splat. The deceptively simple looking shape to the back curves gracefully but supports the back very well. The elevated chair leg stretcher only to the sides are typical of the ingenuity of Danhauser designs many of which are exhibited t in the Applied Arts Museum Vienna or MAK. Ephraim Stahl was the most famous chair maker in Stockholm 1794-1820. He received a royal warrant from the King of Sweden in 1800 and made chairs for the Royal Palace of king Gustav III. Examples of his work are srtill located in the Nordiska Museet Stockholm as well as the royal Swedish households.
These gorgeous elegant tub bergere armchairs have a wonderful curved shape and are uniquely Swedish Gustavian. Usually refered to as bath tub shaped fauteuil, the gorgeous curved backs wrap around and supports the sitter. The carved lion head armrests with gently curving support to turned and carved front legs with traditional sabre legs at the back.
Nice and sturdy and with generous sized seats. Recently redecorated and reupholstered in the traditional manner with blue linen fabric.

The frames painted in french grey and soft powder blue to contrast of timeless elegance. They have been fully restored 5-10 years ago. Being period chairs they are of course a little on the smaller scale. The exquisite silk fabric albeit with a faint water mark to one seat and a minor tea mark to the other.... use as is or perhaps have them cleaned?

The vintage lemon yellow cotton with frilled edges. Antique Regency period chairs are usually much smaller in size but these chairs were made for the more prosperous gentry with large seats. Most likely Indian Raj mid 19th century made in the Regency manner of 1810. The black ebonised finish imitates the rare solid ebony chairs of the period. These chairs are however quite heavy so probably made from rosewood.

Good original shellac patina finish. Solid blonde walnut construction nice and sturdy with only minor signs of wear consistent with age and character.
This type of antique window seat would have graced the formal salon to a fine home and are ideal as hallway seats or end of a bed bench. The elegant and light design would have been made to be placed in front of a long French window or in an alcove. The shallow depth of only 34 cm does not take up too much precious floor space great for hallway seating!.
This size makes them very versatile and is much sought after by designers. Recent upholstery in rich black textured fabric to contrast the blonde wood.

These chairs may have been made for a naval or navigation room hence the lighthouse backs. They are strong and sturdy and are raised in the neoclassical manner with taper front legs and sabre rear legs for extra sturdiness. The vintage upholstered seats are in woven horsehair fabric in keeping with the Empire aesthetic.

These traditional Austrian chairs are bespoke made after an 1820 Danhauser design of the Biedermeier era. the frames are nice and firm and hand made with thick hand cut cherrywood veneers. The lift off seats upholstered in vintage green cotton and could easily be recovered in your favourite material. Good original french polished finish with a few decades of love and care. Original chairs of this era are rare especially in sets of four and more hence this bespoke made set fits the designer's brief. The style works equally well with Empire and Art Deco interiors as well as modern mid century Scandi.

The arched back in a neoclassical shield shape with suble carvings to the armrest tops. These scroll forward and down and are fienly carved with superb finesse. The generous sized comfortable seat of height of 45cm and is made luxuriously comfortable with coil springs as support and are all hand stitched. Raised on sabre front legs with detailed acanthus carvings to the tops usually reserved for ormolu mounts. A very strudy and elegant chair with original finish and patina and upholstered in a vintage woven cotton fabric in duck egg blue. Upholstery in good original and finished with piped edges.

A pair of Scandinavian beauties with well shaped legs and upholstered seat. Although these chairs look like a pair, they are slightly individual, one with a inlaid Masur Birch back panel , the other with string inlay in birch and ebony. the shaped armrests supported on turned urn supports and raised on taper legs. Both are fruitwood with inlaid curved front rail panels and identical upholstered velvel drop in sprung seats. Well polished and very sturdy, they have been taken apart and reglued using traditional methods, so no wobbles or loosness in the frames. Swedish Empire ( English Regency era) armchairs to grace any Stockholm interior or French Empire, Biedermeier setting. Height of seat off floor is 45 cm The seat rail is stamped by master cabinet maker in Stockholm. After the Stockholm Chairmakers Guild was wound up in 1846, the practice of stamping chairs ended. This wing back armchair is the fore runner of reknowned modern companies such as Stressless and IMG Norwegian models that are now so popular. Christies sold one of these in 2013 for a mere 6000 GBP ! The superbly french polished and sturdy mahogany frames carved and mounted with mercurial gilt ormolu bronze mounts and raised on gilt bronze lion paw feet. The newly restored gorgeous silk striped upholstery with subtle olive satin stripes. Upholstered right round so this gorgeous suite can stand with pride in the centre of a room and be viewed from all angles. All seats are fully reupholstered with hand stitched edges in the traditional manner but with coil springs for extra comfort .

Description A museum quality antique original armchair. A very important French directoire period fauteuil armchair by the famous royal ebeniste (cabinetmaker) George Jacob signed and stamped, circa 1796. The elegant gondola back curves and supports beautifully. Two shaped armrests join the front swans neck supports. These scroll down to and join the solid seat frame that is raised my sabre legs.
Upholstered in vintage woven sienna yellow fabric covering the back and separate drop in seat. Apart from the signatures and stamps of authenticity the beautiful rich original patina to the solid mahogany frame is a value point. The master cabinet maker's stamped signature ( IACOB) appears under the from seat rail. The upholsterer's ink signature appears to the inside seat rail.
George Jacob ( 1739-1814) was one of the most famous French cabinet maker's of his time. His works for the King of France Louis XVI and later Napoleon 1st and Josephine are highly sought after and are very rare. During the Ancient Regime under the Kings of France only master cabinet makers were allowed to stamp and sign their furniture as a guarantee of authenticity by the master as a member of the Paris Guild of master cabinetmakers. George Jacob's own stamp appears in the ancient spelling as IACOB. This stamp was used from 1765-1796 the year of his retirement after which his sons took over the workshop. With the ascent of Napoleon, George Jacob returned from retirement to help oversee the constant supply of funiture to Napoleon's residences. It is possible that this armchair may have introduced the newly marrier Mrs Josphine to Napoleon Bonaparte ( formerly known as Marie-Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie ) to the sculptural design element of the swan. Swans became a much identified symbol of the Empress Josephine due to the interior design work by architects Percier and Fontaine specifically for the Chateau Malmaison from 1799 till 1814. In either case whether this chair dates from 1796 or 1804, this chair is certainly by the hand of the master George Jacob and is authenticated by his stamp.

The curvaceous gondola shaped back rails with bas relief carved details with curved armrests terminating in stylised dolphins heads. Vintage fabric upholstered seat and back in Regency watered silk stripe material. Only minor sun fading but in very good condition.

The watergilt acanthus scrolls join arms and back to the generous sized seat that is also covered in Aubusson tapestry. A very regal armchair for any impressive interior.
Raised on turned and fluted legs. Good original water gilt finish with a lovely patina. This is a gorgeous armchair to relax into.
