Large French Empire Giltwood Mirror original gilt details
and original mirror plate glass circa 1835 |
 |
Description
Antique French Empire giltwood
mirror with fine carved gilt border highlighted with water gilt finish and
matt gilt details and is a value point just as much as this retains its original hand drawn
crystal glass with mercurial silvered backing.
Gorgeous mirrors such as these were quite expensive and luxurious when first made and the biggest part of the cost was
the mirror glass due to the limited technology that existed to make such a large perfectly flat single pane mirrors plate. The thick glass is usually quite heavy and in modern terms would be classified as crystal not glass.
The reflective backing of the mirror consisted of silver applied by the mercurial gilding method. The old silver gives a warm grey reflection unlike modern aluminium backed mirrors. Some minor aging or foxing to the silver gives this rare glass a touch of extra character.

1835
