Title   Superb cast iron torchere pedestal stand in ornate neoclassical designed for candelabra circa 1880's

Description Ref Stands 6254

Superb quality solid cast iron torchere pedestal stand in ornate neoclassical designed for candelabra circa 1880's.

The platter shaped top with cast neoclassical design over a tapering fluted column supported by three egrets joined by Roman turned centre. Each has a brass chain held by their beaks.  The legs termionate with padded feet and are joined by an anthenium scroll cast centre stretcher.

This tall antique pedestal design would have been influenced by the excavations from Pompeii and is of Ancient Roman design. Its purpose is to hold aloft a candelabra or torch, hence terchere, to light the room.

The use of cast iron instead of the ancient Roman preference for bronze is because it was the "new" material of the 19th century for furniture and was the material of choice. The superb quality casting indicates it was either cast in Berlin or in Paris possibly by Barbedinne.

European 1880's in the Ancient Roman style.

Title  Large antique ornate sculpted charger with gilt highlights 19th century Berlin Lauchhammer original

Description

Large antique ornate sculpted charger with gilt highlights 19th century Berlin Lauchhammer original.

Cast and signed by the Lauchhammer foundry in berlin in the late 19th century this display platter could easily be mistaken for bronze but in fact was made of the much rarer and much harder to produce material of cast iron. the jewell like quality of this example with its mercurial gilt ormolu highlights adds to the luxury of this gorgeous design.

19th century foundries tried to perfect casting of extremely high quality iron decorative items and those foundries in Berlin certainly succeded. Buderus foundry still makes superb quality castings and is known for their extreley delicate antique jewellery etc.
